Award-winning local artist Susan Marion has been painting exclusively in watercolor for over 45 years. Her representational style of watercolor is characterized by the use of intense, saturated colors (created by glazing layers of transparent watercolor) and strong contrasts in light and shadows. Sue’s favorite subjects include close-up portraits of flowers, birds, and wildlife. She is especially proud of her growing collection of paintings portraying Native American powwow dancers.
Sue earned a Bachelor’s degree in Art, but considers herself a self-taught painter. She is a member of the Colorado Watercolor Society, the Pikes Peak Watercolor Society, and the Mountain Artists. Sue is also a member of the Florence Arts Council, and exhibits at their Bell Tower Cultural Center, as well as at the Fremont Center for the Arts in Canon City and the Manitou Arts Center. She works out of her home/studio in Florissant, Colo.
“I’ve been wild about watercolor since high school art class. Its a dance between artist, water, paint, air, and paper - often unpredictable but full of wonderful surprises!"
“What inspires me to paint is often the commonplace - those easily overlooked visual details in everyday life. The afternoon shadows on the mountain, a brilliant red aspen leaf, a shape of an iris blossom. At other times, my inspiration comes from ‘take your breath away’ moments – a rare bird, a dancer mid-leap, the perfect sunset."
“In my work, I seek to convey the sensory and emotional experience of having ‘been there’ with what I’m painting. For me, paintings are a meditation on the subject of the piece, an archive of my presence with that subject, and an invitation for the viewer to share my experience.”
