I was born on the Gulf Coast of Florida moving to Denver in 1980. When I wasn't working, I enjoyed all that the mountains had to offer, camping, hiking, golfing and watching people freeze their backsides off on the slopes. I took up oil and acrylic painting, pine needle basket weaving, and various Native American arts using leather, fibers and wood and sold many works at arts and crafts shows. I tired of the big city and decided to move to a smaller community coming to Woodland Park in 1994. Wanting to expand my creative outlets, I took up quilting and was a founding member of a local organization, Quilters Above the Clouds. I participated in the Mountain Arts Festival which takes place here the first weekend every August selling my Native arts and textile projects. I continue to donate artwork and quilts to support children, veterans and senior citizens.
In 2016, I took my first watercolor class. Being used to oils and acrylics, I was at first frustrated with the new techniques. But I continued to “play” with watercolors and soon fell in love with them. To me, they are a “gentler” paint medium. I enjoy the soft edges, layered washes and fine detail I can get. My first paintings featured the beautiful mountain landscapes of Colorado. Then I tried my hand at the delicate hummingbird and continue to add more birds and wildlife to my work. While I still dabble in all of the above, I spend the majority of my creative time with my watercolors, whether greeting cards or larger commissioned pieces. I invite you to browse my gallery here on the website and check out new works which I post frequently on my Facebook page at "Brushstrokes by Aline Joy".
